Stories of the World
Stories of the World is one of the major projects at the heart of the Cultural Olympiad. The aim is to create a series of innovative exhibitions to run in 2011/12 featuring UK museum collections reinterpreted by young people, local communities, historians, artists and other fresh voices. In the spirit of the London Olympics 2012, Stories of the World will seek to welcome the world to Britain by using our rich collections to tell inspirational stories about the UK's relationships with the world. Young people will be at the heart of the project, working for the first time in partnership with curators to uncover objects that tell stories closest to them. In the North East, the Oriental Museum is working in partnership with museums in Tyne and Wear and Middlesborough to reinterpret the North East's outstanding world cultures collections. This project, Journeys of Discovery, will involve the museums working with young people from the local area, source communities and specialists to create a series of exhibitions and events across the region from 2010 until 2012.
